DIRECTOR'S NOTES:
This film is perhaps much closer to my own personal experience than any of my other films having lived most of my childhood in expatriate communities around the globe. It was my third collaboration with Roger Deakins, the cinematographer, and many of the locations were shot in the same places that they actually happened: notably the “Djinn Palace” on the edge of Lake Naivasha. We tried to create a look in which the beauty of the clothes would be set against the starkness of the earth and the light, and so we shot, contrary to custom, not at the ‘golden hour’ when the sun is low and the shadows are long, but in the heat of the day when the light is white and hot...
